7 Great Walking Trails in the ‘Burgh

When it comes to bone and joint health, one of the best ways to keep your joints healthy and pain free is to keep them moving. Luckily, the weather is warming up for good outdoor walking and hiking conditions in the Pittsburgh region. Here are 7 great parks to find easy walking trails in the ‘Burgh. 

Riverview Park - 159 Riverview Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15214

Located on the North Side, Riverview Park is over 250 acres and has no shortage of trails to walk or hike, showcasing beautiful landmarks such as the Allegheny Observatory. The Riverview Park Loop Trail is a 2.8 mile loop and begins with a steep incline, taking you through lush tree coverage and follows a ridge along the river. 
Why we love it: The hardwood and hemlock trees provide shade on warmer days and plenty of opportunities for bird watching.

Frick Park - 1981 Beechwood Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15217

Frick Park is Pittsburgh’s largest municipal park and offers a mix of woodlands, river vistas, and urban views. This park is a favorite spot year-young and provides a variety of route trail options, many of which are paved and ideal for walking. The West Rim Wander is a 2.6 mile loop trail and there are several spots where you can stop and appreciate the views. 

Why we love it: The trail is generally quiet, making the West Rim Wander a relaxing experience for visitors of all ages. 

Highland Park - N Highland Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15206

The Highland Park Double Loop is 2.1 miles long and takes you around the reservoir in Highland Park. The trail is open year-round and is a beautiful walk in all 4 seasons but be advised, dogs are not permitted on this trail. 

Why we love it: The trail is a mix of gravel and pavement, is relatively flat, and you’ll see a waterfall along the way.


Fall Run Park - 187 Falls Run Trail, Glenshaw, PA 15116

Fall Run is nestled in a wooded ravine carved by a stream. The trail is a 1.4 mile out-and-back trail and is generally wide and smooth, though can get muddy in wet weather. 

Why we love it: Wooden bridges are found crossing the stream throughout the entire trail and a set of wooden stairs lead you from the base of the park to the top of the 30-foot waterfall midway along the trail. 


South Park - Montour Trail, South Park Township, PA 15129

The Montour Connector Trail is a 2-to-4 mile gravel out-and-back trail that can be shortened by turning back at any time. The trail goes through the woods, into a quiet valley with a stream, before connecting to the Montour Trail. 

Why we love it: This trail is mostly shaded, but does have some sunny spots as well, making it an excellent choice in all kinds of weather.


Twin Lakes Park - 219 Twin Lakes Road, Latrobe, PA 15650

Located in Latrobe, Twin Lakes Park is worth the drive. The Twin Lakes Loop Trail is paved around the lake and you can cut the trail short if you desire. 

Why we love it: The park specializes in accessibility and has stone-paved pathways, which make for an easier hike for people of all ages. 


Motour Woods Conservation Area - 1875 Hassam Rd, Coraopolis, PA 15108

The Meeks Run and Oil Well Trail is a 1.9 mile loop that takes you through the Montour Woods Conservation Area. This trail is a short hike through a shaded forest with creeks and rock formations to enjoy. 

Why we love it: Trails in this area are well marked and have clear signage and maps, making your walk even more relaxing.
